Trading my Triple Rec for a JCM 2000 DSL + Cash... bad idea?

I've had my Mesa Triple Rectifier for a little under three years, and I've found as my music and tone tastes have changed (and arguably matured), I've found myself liking the Mesa tone less and less. I started out playing fast thrashy metal/metalcore, but have moved more towards a progressive metal/rock style (like I said, maturing :P) with more solo's.

Tone-wise, I'm pretty damn tired of fighting with this thing. It seems like no matter which channel/voicing I use, I can't escape the fact that this amp is custom-built for nu-metal. I'd call the distortion kind of... 'plasticky' or 'fake'. It just plain doesn't have any balls, of the mid-rangey type. I want it to sound like a car being ground to pieces in a split second, or a chainsaw ripping apart a guy screaming with a 57 shoved down his throat running through some sort of incredibly loud amp... haha, you get the idea!

I've got a guy who's willing to trade a JCM2000 DSL with two 1960a 4x12 cabs and $400 for my Mesa Boogie Triple Rec and 4x12 cab. Good deal? Will the JCM possibly be the first step on my way to my 'holy grail' of distorted awesomeness? Oh yeah, and how's the clean?

DISCLAIMER: I'd take a sweet 800, but I don't have one offered to me

If it was a TSL I'd say yes.

Tone-wise? Or just 'cause of the third channel?

It just depends on whether or not you like the DSL tone.

It's definitely alot different tonewise from a triple rec!

From a monetary standpoint, considering that he's throwing in 2 cabs and cash I'd say it's not a bad deal.

However, boogie cabs kick ass. Why don't you go decide what sort of head is your favorite first, and then sell the triple rec and buy one?

I think you are closer to the tone you are describing with the Mesa...But I know what you mean about the Nu-metal..

A friend of mine got a jcm 2000 3 years ago witth the 1960a cab ..He's letting it all go for 700 bucks...

I've owned Marshalls And I know the tones you speak of and like them all..

I'm not a big fan of the new marshalls...
especially when my amp tech has more black and gold on the shelves than any other amp...Even the amp tech says marshall quit making real amps..
He hates em...

The jcm 2000 Ain't got shit on a jcm 800. My buddy from work thought the 2000 would be the mac daddy of all jcm's because it had the highest number...
The 800 had way more real distortion ...

The jsx by peavey has that tone you are describing... just go to the music store and play one then go try a marshall 2000 ....theres a Big Damn difference

You would have to make sure he adds the right amount of cash to make it right my man..don't get ripped off

Well I played a JCM 2000 DSL through...i forget the cab actually..it wasnt like a big name(not like a marshall or mesa or like orange or anything)...so i forget, but it sounded awesome..and its got a real good tone..and the mesa's are deff. metal amps, but have a good crunch. Idk, its all preference, obviously..so really go play the JCM and if you dig it get it..simple as that. But dont make the big mistake and just get an amp to get a new amp.

Actually the JCM 6100 has the highest number. That is the best amp Marshall has ever made. I bought one in 1992 and it's still one of my all time fav's.

Update: I traded for the head/cab plus $400, and thus far I must say I feel I made the right decision tone-wise. The JCM2000 actually sounds different with different guitars/pickups! It doesn't cover up any intricacies/variations (intended or otherwise) in my playing, which both accentuates my strengths and makes it easier to find ways to improve my playing (especially with solo's!)

Recording-wise, I must agree with the skeptics: it's not as good as the Triple Rec (probably related to the quality of musicians I've been recording yes...). It cuts through a heck of a lot better, but in my experience thus far it's made it harder to get the guitars to sit right. They're thinner is the best word I can think of for it.

Live though, I love this thing
