used to be sonar now i use tools..

i used to use sonar about 3 years ago..i've been using protools for a while now and i have been reading as many books about it as i can since..but..

in sonar i was able to record in a track then record again over that track and still be able to hear the track under it, which was good for punch ins and outs..but can protools do that..all i've been using is the pre roll and post roll.

anybody know about this?

you can do punch in/punch outs if you want. Look in your manual about punch recording mode

also look up playlists (takes list)

I think you are looking for is the "input only monitoring" option under the "Track" menu. This toggles between the input signal or the prior recorded signal when doing a punch-in. I had the very same question not long ago.
