So I'm sitting here with the default plugins in LE 7.3...

...and I'm wishing I could use the nice free VST plugins I've already got from the previous program I used, without having to buy a VST-RTAS wrapper.

Can anybody recommend me a couple decent RTAS plugins? I don't need anything eccentric, just a couple nice compressors, a decent eq, and a simple limiter. I'll be using the 'search' function now to see if anybody's recommended any RTAS plugins (most threads are about DXi or VST's though... :/ )

*Edit: it would appear RTAS is a less common format for free plugins than I had expected! I will revise my question: what's the best place to start building my plugin collection? An entry-level Waves package? Something else?

*Edit 2: I just picked up the Massey plugs: I'll post my thoughts/experiences when I use 'em

When I first got PT 7.0 I got the Producers Factory Bundle. I like the T-Racks EQ, the BF76 compressor, and the Maxim limiter.

Check out the free versions of the Massey plugins. They won't memorized settings and they don't have all the features of the paid versions, but they are really great plugins, even in the limited free format. I think the full blown versions are something like $79 each.

I'd buy the VST-to-RTAS wrapper. It's invaluable to me, considering how many free or low-cost VST plugins I use. A lot of the best compressors, limiters, and time-domain efx (chorus, delay, phaser, etc.) are freeware. In particular, BuzMaxi3 is probably the best hard limiter I've heard... a friend and I did a shootout of around 20 limiters and BuzMaxi3 beat or equalled the sound of pretty much everything out there, regardless of price. Also, lots of great comps and delays out there in the freeware world... not to mention any synth plugin you might possibly need.

The only thing I haven't been able to find free that was good was a decent EQ. Luckily EQ3 is good enough for just about everything I want to do... a huge improvement over previous Digidesign EQs.

Are you asking for free RTAS plugins? I'm not sure if I know of many besides the free Digidesign ones.

I guess where I'm going with this is, if you're considering buying RTAS plugins, it may be worth buying the adapter and seeing if free VST's will do the job.

Here are some free RTAS plugins I use:
*Orca synth from fxpansion
*Inspector spectrum analyser from rogernicholsdigital
*Xpand and Structure Free from digidesign
(I'm not allowed to post web links yet, hehe)

trackplug

The Wave Arts stuff is very usable....not sure, it might be out of your price range.....but they have different packages and student discounts on a lot of their stuff. "TrackPlug 5 is an all-in-one processor which features a 10-band EQ with several filter types, spectral analysis, a brickwall filter section, dual compressors, a gate, sidechain EQs, clean/vintage compression modes, and a peak limiter."...for $200 or $100 with a discount......decent place to start.

The Massey plugs are great, I have all of them except the distortion plugin. Very, very nice sounding and easy to use.

If you have a bunch of VST plugins you'd like to use I'd also suggest that you just spend the money on a wrapper. It's really not that much, when you consider it opens up the whole world of VST plugins for you.
