Yeah, forget about getting your meter close to zero. Don't dial in very much "tube", all that does is make noise and make things sound like shit. To be honest you would've been better off with the clean gain the dmp3 has. The tube in the presonus isn't really functioning like a true tube preamp at all. Never heard the akg but I'm pretty sure it's not really a huge upgrade over the mxl, they're both cheap chinese mics and the mxl's actually hold up pretty well. Harvey Gearst is pretty well respected around here and uses mxl's all the way down to the cheapy 990 and gets fantastic results with them. Sorry to get off the subject, just remember to keep the tube gain down or completely off and dial in until your levels sound good and your daw meters aren't going red(clipping the converters). When I first started I owned the tubepre which is the single channel version of what you had and there were some sources that barely made my meter jump.

So you ignored our good advice in the past ...

... and you went out and bought a piece of shit you were probably advised against.

And low and behold ... it sounds like shit!

Now why, exactly, should we give you more advice?

I'm just askin'.

Now, run suringe, run like the wind and give it all back before return policy expires and get something worth mentioning...

Just my two kopeks...

If it's too loud try turning it down.

Works for me.

Chess is right - unlike in a lot of scenarios where the popular idea is usually foolish or wrong (like the number of people who run out to buy Beyonce albums), we here are not intent on steering people wrong. The DMP-3 is highly regarded because at 150/160 bucks, it is an excellent preamp. I have one and use it on a good number of sources when I want a clean, undistorted sound with little coloration.

This is a good point. If you are getting distortion, turn down the gain on the preamp or back away from the mic.

And in the future, learn to trust people's advice. Of course, if you act as you did last time you asked questions, you will do nothing we suggest. In fact, why don't you try turning UP the gain on the pre... maybe a little reverse psychology will work

Yes, so don't run like the wind so the return policy does expire... hehehe
