recording the xv-88

I just got a Roland xv-88 and I love it. I also got cakewalk 9 and thought I would be ready to start recording. All I want to do is record sounds from the xv-88 in layers onto cakewalk, but I admittedly suck at this and don't know what I'm doing. I tried to connect midi into my soundcard but it doesn't really work. Do I really need a new soundcard when all of my sound is coming from the 88. Thanks for any help. I know this should be simple.
