Make sure nothing else gets in the way. Meaning, if any sound doesn't have to have a bass component, EQ it out.

i usually boost a bit around 3-4k and 100hz. some light compression about 2:1. sometimes i will sidechain a compressor triggered by the kick. this allows the bass to be a bit louder in the mix, but the bass drum can still punch through. seriously though, ymmv.

i must say, it has been MUCH easier to get the bass to sit right in my mixes since i have been tracking it through my la610.

I set up two output buses in Sonar - one for the bass and one for everything else. I boost a few dB somewhere around 250 to 350 Hz on the bass bus, and cut the same frequency and Q the same amount on the main bus. Works every time to make the bass pop through without being too loud. This trick also works well for vocals at around 1 KHz, and it's really useful for voice-over work with talking over music. You can make the music as loud as you want and still hear every word clearly.

strange but true,
make sure not to track it too bassy (with too many lows in it)
of course you want the right amount, but that may well be less then you think.
too much bass in a bass (especially in the 150ish sorta region) will make it very difficult to turn up in any useful way.

Record the bass flat. on that track, bump 80hz. cut 200-500. Bump 500-900. Compress the shit out of the results.(careful!) mix well and enjoy! YMMV

yes, i've found that this works regardless of the bass, strings, style of music, and player!

"Flat" means, to set your EQ setting to the mid settings, usually marked with a "0" or 'unity'. You add your bass and treble EQ-ing on the mixdown. 'Kick' isn't offered.

i get decent results by just using a D/I box by itself!!!! it gives the cleanest tone.........and all i have to do is add some EQ, and slap some compression on it, and im done!

try boosting around 60hz....cut some 400 hz, and add a slight bump in the 800hz region, and also slight bump in the 8k to add some clarity........

...works like a charm!
