Otari MX 5050 MK III-8

First of all, I wanted to say hello. I am new to this forum and a big fan of home recording. I have recently acquired an Otari MX 5050 MK III 8 track recorder and have some questions. I have been reading through related postings and have yet to find some of the answers I am seeking. I apologize ahead of time if this has been covered on another post. First of all, does anyone know where I might be able to download or find a manual (schematics would be great too) for the 8 track version? The machine itself seems to be in good shape however, I need a new pinch roller. Is terryscrubberrollers.com the best place to get one. I saw a posting that said someone paid 40 bucks for a new one yet when I went to his site the rollers cost 85 bucks. Has the price gone up? Also, I am having a problem with the phone level output. When you touch/turn the knob a loud popping comes over the cans. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, where can I get calibration tape.

Thanks,
G

Headphone level output

I realize that this problem may just be a bad pot, but I have not yet had a chance to take the machine apart and thought it could possibly be the result of some other problem.

Good news is that you can order the manual direct from Otari:

http://www.otari.de/support/manuals.html

http://www.otari.com/support/parts.html

The pinch roller you also can order from Otari, along with just about any other part.

Terry's rubber rollers is a good place but first see how much a new roller would be from Otari. If Terry will rerubber one for you for significantly less then I'd do it but if the price difference is less dramatic, I'd get one from Otari.

The noise you're hearing from the headphone knob is most probably due to oxidation of contacts and from the machine being unused for a long time and not stored in ideal conditions. For pots use the caig fader lube 5% formula, spray a short burst or two inside, if it's not a sealed pot and work it back and forth. For typical non rotating contacts, spray some caig 5% deoxit.

Good luck!

The pot is either dirty, has corroded wiring or both. First, clean the pot with De-Oxit spray cleaner and twis back and forth all the way several times. If that does'nt clear it up, check out the wiring to the pot. If that looks good (good clean solder joints) then the pot has to be replaced.
