RNC vs. RNLA

I bought a pair of FMR RNCs a while back and leant one to a friend. He fell in love with it and I figured I'd let him keep that and just buy a new one.

Then I got to thinking about the RNLA, so I'd have two different tools to choose from.

So if you had a choice, would you rather have a pair of RNCs or one RNC and one RNLA?

Thanks in advance for your opinions, Cheers, Rez

I could be mistaken, but can't you just set a compressor to a fairly extreme setting and it will act, at least after a fashion, like a limiter?

I guess if there were no advantage to having a device that strictly limits, then they wouldn't be made / wouldn't be popular - but it all comes down to how often you yourself feel the need to hard-limit things.

If there's never been a need in the past and you like having two stereo channels of RNC compression, I'd replace your given-away RNC with... another RNC!

However, if you are looking for a new flavor of toy to try out, they aren't thousands of dollars

I have one of each. I do not use them a whole lot but when I do they get used on totally different things. RNC on background vox or elec gtr, the RNLA on jangley acoustics, harmonica or tamborine for example. Of course, anything goes.

It is hard to beat them for the price!!

FWIW, I owned both and sold the RNC. It's a good compressor, but I prefer the sound of the RNLA for those situations where I want to track with compression. If I were using them for mixing in the analog realm, my opinion might be different.

I have both. Prefer the RNLA for most things.

You can set the RNC to act as a limiter but it has a totally different sound than the RNLA.

I have both and use the RNLA more. Why? I like the color it gives my recordings.

0 threashhold, and at 1:inifity for leveling RNC, never have used RNLA yet....I do like the RNC for added punch on bass and snare, and weak vocal helps punch up. Good gear for the money, I'd take one each.

RNLA - Rarely higher than 6:1 ratio, fairly slow attack and release, and I prefer the sound of it with the "Log Release" button engaged. I've used it for acoustic and elec gtr, vocal, bass, hand percussion. I rarely use more than 2-4 dB gain reduction at peaks.

The RNC does good soft limiting in supernice mode with a high ratio and careful threshold setting.
