deep snare drums
yes aye yes aye
I just got & I'm awaiting a Tama brass shell 14x8 snare & my good friend just bought & collected a Tama Superstar 14x8 so my particular question is I'm wanting the deep but solid snare sound similar to Steve Gadd & some of Simon Phillips snare sounds. What head would the knowledgable people put on top??? my instinct says try a vented head, what do you guys think??

Evans Genera G2 Coated. I've got one on my Gretsch 6x14 and it's great. What the heck is a vented head? The only vented heads I've got I vented myself with a drumstick. I don't recommend them.

For live play I use the Evans Vented dry , but for recording I like the Evans g2 coated or reverse power dot. I actually prefer a little more ring when recording. The Dry sounds too dry.

I am a big fan of the Evans vented and do use one on a 14"x 8" with very good results

Or instead of buying a vented head you could just buy a coated powerstroke and poke holes around the edge with a thumbtack. This gives you more control over how dried-out your snare sound is.

With the genera HD dry heads, if you line the holes up with the lugs (as best you can) you will have less ring. If you don't line them up, you will have more ring. I don't know why.
