The mk2 has no pick guard, and therefore it looks naked.

Hehe, sorry - just ribbing you for the silliest thing you've ever posted here. The best acoustic guitars I've ever encountered have no pick guard.

Before I start, I am the proud owner of a mkII, and did alot of research before buying.

In a nutshell, they used the same external casing, and same buton layou, and just reassigned what some of the buttons do. There are however some major changes along with that.

The main differences are the hard drive space (40 gig vs. 80 gig, the latter being the mkII), the internal drum machine (scrapped entirely on the mkII), the mkII was given a slightly different screen that supposedly is easier to see and work with (though I've never actually used the original so I can't compare)... I know the mkII has a contrast knob to change the display which the original might not have had. There are a few additional effects for guitars also.

The 64-voice GM synth, which was originally accessed and edited via its own fader and associated buttons, located between the Track and Master faders, has been changed. The section has now been given over to the task of sub-mixing, for when up to eight audio inputs are being mixed with the record tracks during mixdown or playback.

On the mkII, the Tap Tempo button, which allowed fast alteration of the speed of delay times and modulation effects, is now the Locate Set button.
As far as I know, those are pretty much the main differences... oh yeah, and the color is different (the most important thing IMO...)

If you are wondering if the 2488 can get the job done, ask RAMI. His music kicks ass, sounds great, and I think this is the centerpiece of his setup.

i know the 2488 will get the job done. i'm was just wondering if the price difference between the two is worth it. the big thing is the hard drive space. that's important to me.

thanks for all the info.

agreed. yeah, that extra 40 gigs is a VERY big difference. I've been recording on my mkII for a few months now, and have about 5 near-finished songs, and countless "ideas" and I think I've used only about 2 gigs with some mastered bounces.

I don't have either machine, but I would hope that the mkII would also have fixed the the firmware problems reported on the original 2488 -- the worst of which was reported lockups on playback preceded by ear-splitting noise. Perhaps that was related to the now eliminated internal drum machine feature, which I think was actually an internal mechanism for "programming" the GM sound module. So far I have not seen any such problem reports about the mkII.

question for 89gtsleeper -- The GM support 128 voices, right?

Tom

I think they took care of all of those problems on the original 2488, before even putting out MKII. There were 2 software updates. I have the latest version and don't have any problems with it.

they both use either 16 bit or 24 bit recording. i take it you can't mix a song with tracks recorded in both?

but can you convert one to the other with it?

Yeah, like you said, you have to select 24 or 16 bit for the project (song) itself. But you can export them however you want.

MrChubbs is on a distinguished road
2488

I have a 2488. been using it for awhile now. I think the viewer on the mkII is bigger & clearer.
comming from 4 track tape recording to the 2488, for me the difference in the 2488 and mkII isn't great enough to worry about.
