delete notes function deletes everything

no matter how I set up the delete notes function when editing midi it just deletes everthing. I have been through all the manuals etc. No good. Weirdly, if I import a midi file, say for example a third party midi drum file the function works perfectly. I would just overlook this problem normally but I'm working with an Axon Ax guitar to midi controller and it's a bit noisy as far as ghost notes are concerned. Is there perhaps any other way of filtering out these Ghost notes?
