problem, please help

When i click on thr red 'R' then hit record, it is recording the tune from the first layer, this is with nothing going into the laptop (mic, line in ect). If you have the volume all the way down so you cannot hear anything then it doesnt do it but what good is that when i need to hear live what im recording. Im assuming its a very small annoying tab button thing that i need to click but have been looking round everywhere going crazy and still cant find it!!

Can anybody possibly help me?.
