I think his point is that if someone is looking to buy gear, they'll check out the ads section. Sticking a link to it in what seems like the appropriate discussion area makes the ad area useless. Sure, you are pushing your product on those who most likely would like to buy it, but we like to be obnoxious pricks only in the way we talk to each other. "Spam ain't coo yo!", as M.C. Manners would rap it.
