outdoor noise-wall??

S we are gearing a new studio/rehealsalcave for our 2bands, the questions continue.
Thanks for the replies on the previous cymbal-attenuating matter.

Now, our place is in the countryside and relatively remote, but for one neighbour, some 50meters of forest between.
To be considerate we're thinking about the noise issue outside to that direction, especially low-frequencies.

Would a zigzag-shaped high, wooden fence between help the deal??

Any other outdoor solutions?? (No room inside for additional insulation)

Unless you want to build mile-high walls it'll go around ANYTHING.

Actually, barriers OUTSIDE can be effective. They do it with road barriers all the time. Now, that said, a fence isn't going to stop low frequencies - not much will.

A wooden fence might stop your neighbor's dog from getting to you but it wont do anything to stop your music from getting to your neighbor. Talk to your neighbor, if the music doesn't bother him then don't worry about it.

For low frequenices, a fence will do almost nothing. The problem here is that as the pitch or frequency gets lower, the actual sound wave gets longer. If you look at a diagram of a sound wave, you see that it actually bends... this is what sound does. Your lower frequencies will bend up and over your fence, then come right back down to their house. I don't think there is much you can do here, but at 50 meters away with trees between the two, I really don't think it will be that loud unless you play outside.

I'm not sure that sound is like a wave??....

Like, a speaker would create a sine wave??? no...

It's often presented that way, but is actually differences in air pressure??
It won't crawl over the fence like a snake... more like some differences will go over and radiate some back down.... but weaker.

I actually got the idea from noise-fences via a highway.
Problem is:

The lower freqs are gonna radiate right through a single plank fence....
some weirdness in structure would be needed??

Yes, my analogy was exaggerated, but you get my point... the lower frequencies move alot more, and simply putting up a single ply 8 foot fence will do almost nothing. Yes the highs and mids will be helped some, but bass is very difficult to control.

Freeway sound walls are made of heavy masonry and do tend to work a little bit for low frequencies, but in all honesty unless you need that kind of heavy fence for other reasons you are most likely better spending your money on beefing up and sealing the house wall.

My two house studios have had exterior walls and they do help to some extent. You would need a 2 meter high block or stone wall to do much.
