Building One

I have DJ equipment laying on a desk. I need a rack. I was going to buy one and then I saw the price. I didn't want to dish out a couple hundred dollars for a rack. So I decided I'll build one, you know make a project out of it. Do you think I'll spend more money? and do you think it is a better idea?

You can build one for under $50 (well, depending on the size). Alls you need is a circular saw, a drill and some basic skills. It's easy.

How big do you want it? I build my own 4u cases for my PA setup.

I don't use proper rack strips though; just a piece of 1" baton down the side. I then use round head screws (with nylon washers of course) to hold everything in firmly.

I just used MDF stuck and screwed to a baton frame then covered the thing in carpet and put a handle on it.

Cheap 'n' cheerful!

I have a set of 6U and a set of 8U rails laying around if your intrested.
I would let them go for nothing if you'll pay shipping. Just one set though I would keep the other just in case.

Well I have 2 things that need to fit, plus a mixer that has to go somewhere...maybe on top. But I want a few extra slots in case I buy more effects and what not. So I guess a small would should do. Maybe 4 or 6 slots?

ooooo wow man. I guess you're doing your part, giving back to the community haha. Yea I'll take them off your hands. I'll take which ever you'd prefer me have. That knocks out a big portion of the price for building it. What else would I need? Just the plywood and some screws?

Pretty much. You can get plywood in small sheets a lowes. I would predrill you screw holes. Long clamps are nice if they are available, or one or two of your best buddies to hold the peices while you screw them.

I would first draw it out. Then bring the dimensions to lowes to see how big of peice of wood to buy. You could try your luck having lowes cut the peices for you, but I wouldn't advise it. They tend to be speedy about it and do a sub par job. A local cabinet shop could cut them for you if you didn't want to. But they will charge something.

I will package the rails and ship them either USPS prioity (2-3days) or parcel (2-9) which ever you choose.

Just pm your address.

Do you have a paypal account?

Man I built mine out of an old desk somebody was throwing away. I just made a few cuts, used a couple spare 2x2s for bracing, and mounted up a pair of 6u rails that cost me like8 bucks for the pari at guitar center.

8 bucks. I doubt I could ship them for that.

I would check out GC first.

hey, I don't think I'm going to make it anymore. My father is being a royal arse so what is going to happen is, I'm going to DJ the parties with a table and just have it looking ghetto. I told him that he was paying for it and he bails on it when I talk to him about it now. So I'm not paying to build a rack that I'm only using for the summer just to go back to school in the fall. I don't have the time nor patience for his ass. He won't even toss a few bones towards my tuition cause hes a bum father. Never has been in my life nor paid for anything. Never lived with him either. I just know him. Let me stop venting. Just know, all of you who don't have a broken family with their mother and father still together and pays for your food and what not while your in school, make sure you thank them. Cause its hard as shit when you have no one to go to when you have no money and your hungry.

thanks again but its just the principle now. I'm not going to pay for something that isn't MINE. My father bought that and said I could use it with my brothers and I don't feel I need to invest in it. im going to wait till I get my own stuff before I invest in it.

18 and I do have a job at school cause its the only way. I just don't get paid much. But the point I was making was I'm tired of the kids nowadays cussin at their parents and what not when their parents hook it up for them. I see cats at school all the time on the phone with their parents talkin bout "I need the money now bitch damn" and I'm sittin there wit my mouth hangin like i'll be 30 years old callin my mom a bitch and I guarentee you she will throw me against the wall and knock me the hell out.
