Hey guys, do you recall, some time ago, discussing 1/2" Maxell tape and whether it existed or not? Well, those that said yes were right. Here's proof:
http://cgi.ebay.com/5-MAXELL-Prof-Hi...QQcmdZViewItem They're called MAXELL UD50-10R. ![]() |

Wow. I can't even imagine what people want for Maxell 1/2" tape on ebay. Considering I've seen regular UD 35-180 going for upwards of $70 for a single reel, 1/2" must be about $500 at that rate!
![]() Just kidding, I have no idea what it would go for. ![]()

I personally feel it may not even sell at all and if it does, may not go for much. This as the result of the tape not being well known and info being virtually non-existant. It will be a sleeper deal IMHO, tho I may be wrong. At the same time, I'd be hesitant buying an opened product.

Maxell made 1/2" tape and it was available in the early 80s. They stopped at "consumer" machines and never made it to wide gap formats.

No please, just talk a bit more... elaborate for us on the gap issue and how you see it relating to tape formulations, or any other recording topic if you like. I think the members here can learn something from what you have to say... and how you say it.
![]() Don’t mind me… be a sport… forget me for a moment and think of the other members. What you can tell them about gap in reference to tape formulations probably can’t be found on the web. Why keep these golden nuggets from the brethren here? ![]() Anyone can, "Go read up on it." But then we wouldn't need a forum.

Heh... weird, I got almost the exact same results but with the addition of a more specific suggestion.

For those that are as stupid as it gets, "Narrow gap" format machines stop at 1" width tape format. 1/2" is the norm like the TASCAMS and FOSTEX machines. Wide gap (lack of a better term) pro machines go to 2"
Pro machines fit 16-24tracks on 2" tape. Narrow gap (format) machines fit 16-24 tracks on 1/2" -1" tape. The japanese refer to these heads as "narrow gap" meaning the width of the track. Eddie Cileti more correctly refers to these heads as "narrow format" Whichever, I assumed people here knew the difference between these two formats but I guess I was wrong. Maxell was a company geared towards consumer (non-pro) machines like cassettes and 1/4", 1/2" reel machine tape. They did not cater to pro level equipment. http://industryclick.com/magazineart...2583&SiteID=15 This article makes a reference to "narrow" format heads vs. "wide" format (gap) heads.

The word "gap" is nowhere to be found in the attached document.
What the crap are you talking about, man? Please, I'd like to know. Educate us. |

There's a strong difference between head gap and track width.
You just got them a little mixed up. I forgive you ![]() |

Oh, BTW the first line definately applies to you because, after the first line. I explained that the document refers to "narrow format" and it is a more correct definition. The japanese refer to "narrow gap" head (NOT THE F'n track GAP) as track width. IE: Japenese call it narrow gap meaning the track width (like the english used to refer to cigarettes as fags). To us, it is "narrow format" Now you have been educated.

It's time to narrow the gap between us and Japenese.
I'm am for narrowing gaps. What'cha think? ![]() *********** Hey, MCI, you could be Bill's advisor, so insted of redefining "IS", he could simply point his finger toward The Emperor of The Sun and get over with it. What are your sources! Show us those Japanese citations. Of course I think that gap is very precisely defined as far as heads go....

I would have thought of a language a bit more obscure than Japanese myself. But then he would have to explain how the unwritten language of Western Yugur became the official lingo of the recording industry. Oh what a tangled web we weave...
