broke mic?

I bought an akg d112 off ebay and I think something inside is loose. When I first recorded with it I thought my kick drum had a loose lug or something. I placed the mic just out side the resonant heads hole. In this mp3 is the d112 at the kick, then me shaking the d112, than a vocal mic in the same position to show the kick was not making the rattling sound. When I was shaking the mic I'm sure that low sound was the cable, but the high rattle is the culprit. http://www.filefreak.com/pfiles/17324/brokemic.mp3
Is there any hope in fixing this mic? I don't see a way to open it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Haha what coincidence.

I'm in the middle of taking apart my D112 which is broken too, but with a rather more serious problem; for some reason one of the solder tags is no longer connected to the coil; grrrr.

To open it up:

1. Remove 4 screws from rear of mic (on it's "dead" axis); they're small black ones recessed into the shell.

2. Remove grey windscreen and capsule assembly.

3. Remove two silver screws; they retain the windscreen. Now you have access to the capsule, basket and various o-rings.

4. Remember how it all came apart and be careful with the wires; they're so easily broken.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the info, it should help a lot. I hope that when I take it apart I will be able to notice what was loose.

I took it apart and didn't see anything loose, but I put some small weather stripping in some spots to see if it would help which it didn't, so I am assuming its the capsule. I paid 130 for the mic on ebay and they will accept the return minus the shipping cost. I'm still considering replacing the capsule instead depending on its price, but I havn't been able to get a hold of AKG, since Im not an actuall technician they may not even sell it to me. Is it worth fixing? I'm also starting to doubt this mic all together, I read that the DKC 29 capsule in the D112 was used in other mics, including the DM800 and the D190. None of these mics were advertised as large diaphragm mics and were not for the same applications. What is so special about the D112 other than a larger casing? It seems to me like General Motors throwing a wing on a cavalier and calling it a sports car. The capsule in the D112 doesn't even seem very large, anyone know which kick mic actually uses the largest capsule? I am probably just missing the understanding of how different parts of a microphone affect its sound. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could shed some light on this for me. Thanks.

Sorry to bring this thread back up, but Im not really sure any more if there is anything wrong with the mic or not. Is it possible the d112 is just better at picking up other noise in the drum? I am about to send the mic back, but before I loose any more money I would like to be sure. If someone with a d112 could listen to the mp3 clip at the beginning of this thread and help me confirm there is a problem with the mic that would be great. Thanks

I feel it´s broken somehow ( listening the sample )
Attach a wav instead of mp3 to exclude mp3 problems.
Can you listen the mic without anything else in the chain,
staight from the preamp?
