Nirvana

Hi, my band are currently recording a demo on our roland vs-840ex, but we'd like some help on tips how to get a close sound to one of our influences, Nirvana.
We'd like help with things like guitar, drum EQing, vocal effects, overall compression, reverb, etc, etc.
We particulalry like the sound of 'Nevermind'.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

first off, high end on guitar that overpowers most drum kits (a la Neil Young) - some drummers won't like it, but listen how drumparts just fade away when the guitars cut in.. In fact, they picked Steve Albini in part for their next album because he could get a fatter, punchier drum sound then was on Nevermind

Second, massive compression - compress the hell out of it...that's typical of the sound at that time - when in doubt, compress it a LOT "

Third, I think the vast majority of those vocals are pretty dry from a reverb standpoint.. I think "Something in the way" had some chorus on the vocals...keep reverb to an very small level.

That's the best advice I can give...Truth is, I think a lot of that goes to Butch Vig, and it's hard to steal a guy's signature sound, (In Utero sounded a lot different because it had Steve Albani producing) - but best of luck.
