5" reels?
Hi,
I got a Tascam 22-2, can it run with 5" reels? And what's the deal with "low-torque" reels? I read it is supposed to stabilise the speed, will it work on my deck too? I got another silly question Is it possible that I run a 7" reel on the supply side and a 5" reel on a take up side, and vice-versa? Would it destroy my machine ? Sorry total newbie here...Thanks and regards |

Yes you can use 5" or 7" reels and use them together if you want. A low torque reel has a larger center hub, so no matter how little tape is left it will have a larger diameter, which = lower torque. You can't fit as much tape on a low torque reel.

If the center section of the reel that the tape goes around on is the same size it wont matter.

One possible problem with using different diameter reels - if your deck's fast wind tension (brake) settings are marginal, the greater inertia of a larger diameter reel may cause tape spillage when stopping from fast wind modes - not real common, but I've seen it occasionally... Steve

Quote:
The closer to the center of the hub the tape is the greater the tension on the tape, so on a machine with a large/small reel setting the small is for 5 & 7, and the large for 10-1/2". The low-torque 7” reels have a large diameter hub the same size as a 10-1/2” NAB reel hub. ![]()
