Problem with my cat.
Well my pal for 15yrs. might have to be put down. "Hendrix" hasn't eaten or used his litter box for 3 days. Pukin' green stuff. After some major$$$$ all they can tell me is they want to keep him on I.V. o-night and see if he'll eat.
X-rays, bloodwork, temp, etc. all look normal. If he doesn't perk up and get better they want to do an "upper G.I" barium and a series of x-rays to the tune of about $700.00 in addition to what I've already spent. Might just be time for "the big dirt-nap." ....sniff

Perhaps you could have him skinned and turned into a functional pair of slippers!

Wow, those symptoms match exactly what had just happened to my cat. In my case though, it was a urinary obstruction. Something was preventing him from being able to urinate. They couldn't spot the obstruction on the X-rays, but they noticed that his bladder was greatly inflated (about 3 times as big as normal). I'm sure your vet would have noticed if his bladder was larger than normal, right?
They kept a cathoder in Monty overnight, and he seems to be doing better now. Hopefully maybe Hendrix has something similar. Good luck!

I'm probably reaching here, but have you checked to make sure you're not feeding him food from the recall list?

Thanks. Guess I'll know more in the morning when I pick him up. He's gone through being sick and puking a bunch of times before, not like this though. He's always pretty much kept his appetite. From what I understand, if they don't eat for 3 days or so,they'll go into liver failure.
Just saw the previous post. Yes he gets Iams dry food, Which wasn't affected by the recall.

Sorry to hear that man. That's cool that Hendrix lived to be 15 though. Sounds like he has a pretty kick ass owner and friend.

I feel for ya. In addition to having to watch your cat suffer, you have the burden of having to decide when to stop hemorrhaging money and just end it for him. It's always a tough call because you're never quite ready to say goodbye. I had to make that call a couple years ago when my cat was dying from kidney failure, but I wish I'd made it a day earlier when I took him to the vet. My thinking was to spend an extra $100+ bucks to try to keep him alive for another few days so my wife (who was traveling that week) would have a chance to say goodbye to him. But 24 hours later he was doing even worse, so the only fair thing to do at that point was to take him back in and help him die a peaceful death.
It sucks that you don't know what's ailing him though, if they've ruled out a urinary infection (quite common in neutered males of all ages). But at age 15 it could be just about anything.

I really don't like cats. In fact, I jerk off constantly just so God will kill them. Sorry.

Not being a vet or knowing your cat there is little I can add to their recommendations other than my hopes for a Hendrix recovery. I lost one 8-year-old buddy to FLV. Almost lost my (at the time) 7 year old to an infected uterus. She was throwing up bigtime and had a general infection going that was nearly fatal. It took her weeks to recover from her surgery while they searched for antibiotics that worked. Mighty pricey. Considering the annoyance that this cat brings to my life I can't say the exorbitant cost to keep this cat breathing was a bargain. But she survived. She's now 11. ![]() Last edited by drstawl; 06-26-2007 at 16:36.. |

Thanks for your good wishes. And for those of you who don't like cats, I used to be one of you. My wife and I wanted a dog, but we were both gone a lot at the time. We just didn't feel it was fair to keep one chained up outside so...when a friend at work brought in this 6mo. old stray as a last ditch effort to keep from taking him to the humane society, I buckled. He's pretty cool too. He's the most "dog like" cat I've ever seen. Comes to me when I call him, doesn't do the dumb figure 8 thing around your legs. Just plops at my feet for a belly rub. When I watch t.v. or am at the computor, he lies down with his head on one of my feet like an ol' hound dog.. Oh, did I mention that he weighs 18 lbs.?
He's a BIG BOY! Hope to keep him around a while longer. Gonna miss him when he's gone. Tried to post a pic, but it won't work.

you gotta know when HE needs to be let go. He is fifteen, sick, think about it quickly, don't let him suffer for long. Been down this road. Now I am to the point of wondering what the animals are going to do when I am gone.

Isn't the vet just great. I had a problem with my cat and they ran $300 worth of tests to tell me she had an upset stomach... I told them I wouldn't pay it for that and they knocked it down to $130.

Well, I had to make the tough decision this morning. I had to put my pal down. He got worse, still wouldn't eat. Also had some sort of pain in his abdomen that he wouldn't let them touch. They wanted another 3 bills to keep him another day and try some agressive antibiotics and stuff. Just couldn't do it. I think it was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
He's lying on a towel in my living room. I have to go and get my 8yr. old daughter from daycare. Not sure what I'm going to tell her. Thanks to all of you for your good wishes and support. Chas.

Sorry about your pal. I feel for you. I love my cats and would be very upset if something happened to one of them.
