Right. What are you recording? Where are you recording/mixing it? How many channels you need? You want lots of mics to play with or a few really good ones? You want an analogue mixer or control surface? You recording on PC i take it? Any more info you can think of would be great...

I am not computer based at all, but here's what I've come up with for about that money and am getting great results...
700pr - Yamaha HS80M Monitors 40pr - Auralex Mo Pads 900 - Tascam 2488 mkII stand-alone recorder 160 - AKG Perception 200 Condensor Mic 100 - Shure SM57 Dynamic Mic 200 - Beyer Dynamics DT770 Headphones 100 - Zoom MRT3 Drum Machine 300 - Various Mogami Cables for everything (don't buy good equipment and shitty cables, these are the best) 400 - Mic Stands, supplies for building some furniture and some quadratic diffusors, and acoustic foam, a few other odds and ends... |

Yeah, kind of need info on what you are planning to do in there, and also what you have already on hand before you can expect to get much of any kind of help around here.

I recommend reading around a bit to learn more about this kind of stuff. There's literally a million combinations of equipment we could pick out for you. But we don't know how you work, so what we like could be entirely different than what you like.

Just plug a unisphere mic into a ghetto blaster and record some raw raps to cassette. Save some cash and get fresh at the same time.

In that case, I would say the most important things to buy and focus on are the monitors and headphones.
The Beyer-Dynamic DT770 are an amazing headphone choice for all kinds of music. They are extremely comfortable and have an amazingly crisp and accurate sound. For the money (around 190 bucks), it is probably your best bet. For monitors, you may look into doing something with a sub. If not, and you only use two monitors, make sure you have something with 8s in them. If you go with 6" or 5" speakers, you will probably end up putting in too much bass below 150hz and it won't sound very good when you play it in the car with the 15s in the back.... If you're ready to step it up and have to do alot of reading and learning, I would recommend going with Reason 3.0 and getting a good solid midi controller. And I hope you have a computer that is on the higher end of things and isn't loaded down with a hard drive full of porn like mine... ![]() |
