well, it's not really a matter of what's better, it's a matter of what's right for the job. To record, multitrack, balance and eq on,... the Tascam 4(8) track wins. For mixdown, a 3head deck in good shape wins. Some guys on the board say: get a reel to reel for mixdown, but if you calibrate and bias your tapedeck and use good tape it will sound warm and fuzzy!

My advice: get a good portastudio and a nice 3 head deck. forget about your 'puter, haha. No really, both tascams and good 3head decks are dirt cheap nowadays!

( i love my 'new' aiwa deck with hx pro...love my tascam 688 too btw. )
