Bass Traps on a budget

I've been reading as much as I can about room treatment, but I'm still fairly green on the subject. I'm trying to treat my room on an extremely thin budget. Would there be any benefit at all in throwing these in the corners or is it a total waste? How do these differ from the Auralex traps?

I'd be wary of cheap foam. See my Fraud Report:

www.ethanwiner.com/fraud.html

Also, if you're really on a budget you'll do much better using bales of fiberglass left in their bags stacked up in the corners. For much more information on all of this see my Acoustics FAQ:

First of all there is no test data. Without test data you have no idea at all of the kind of foam you are dealing with and what its absorbtive properties are.

Second, even if it were good foam you need at least four inches of foam to get good bass absorbtion. Looking at the six inch width and depth of the triangle you realize that only a tiny portion of the face is backed with four or more inches of foam.

You're better off saving up for something that will do the job like a DIY bass trap using 703 or equal.

Absolutely!!!! I bought a bunch of foam off ebay; 1" and 2" thick and some corner "traps." My mixes didn't improve one single bit, but my room "looked" more like a studio...

After a year of considering new monitors, new mixing software, new mics, new ears, etc. I found Ethan's site and read everything I could. I downloaded the free test tones and did the test as described on his site. No big surprise my room sucked!

But for less than $300 worth of material I built 6 bass traps. It made all the difference in the world.

The foam did pay off though when my wife and I took her good China set to her parents for Thanksgiving... it worked wonderfully as packing material
