Head, no head, or a hole in the head??
Monday night i'm recording a country band. I'm using a shure beta 52 on the bass drum,, and a pair of oktava 012's OH. To get a nice bass recording, should i leave the front head on, take it off, there is no hole in it for the mic, but i could cut one, if i had too. any preferences out there? Also i have a peice of egg crate style foam in for damping, does a pillow or blanket work better, I can spend the day recording different options... any suggestions are much appreciated!!

It totally depends on the sound you want. Tuning will also be key. For a softer, poofy/boomy sound that would work for old-school country, I'd say leave both heads on and mic outside the resonant head. If you want a more modern sound, with greater attack, then you'll want a mic inside the drum, either through a port hole, or by just removing the front head.

Thanks
they are doing a mix, but overall it;s a newer style, carrie underwood, hank jr, etc. I'll try taking the head and laying the mic inside pointed towards the beater I assume?

No head is better
I took the head off, extended the boom into the center of the drum pointed it straight up and tried it that way, sounds better. less muddy, and you hear the beater atrack on the head clearer. I'lleave it like that, and now try different mic positions...

A sample
Here's a short clip, there are no effects at all. This a new recording space for me, so listen to to see if the room is accoustically ok? I didn't hear anything, but would like a few more opinions....thanks, JasonBird
