Arrow Drum Rec. ~OHs~

I'm going to record a fellow band I know. I'll be using the MOTU ultralite w/ 2 preamps. How should I use the preamps for the 5 piece kit (3 toms, 2 cymbals, hihat, 1 bass, 1 snare)?

I was thinkin:

-2 Rode NT5s
OR
-1 Rode nt5 and a shure beta52 kick mic

You could probly tell that Im not a drummer.

If you only have two pres, I'd say two Rode NT5s from out in front of the kit and pray that your room sounds good. Buy some pres.

I'd use both Rodes; one about two drums stick lengths directly above the snare, aimed at the at the snare and the other on the front kick head.

Exactly what I would do.
If I was not going to do a lot of tom fills I may even put 1 in front of the kit focused toward the kick and one just on the snare(really close just under the hi-hat).It will give a bigger snare sound in relation to the rest of the kit.

Nothing wrong with that. It still comes down to the player and how he hits. The way I discribed gives you some mix control over kick to snare ratio after the fact. With the Mixerman method with just two mics (nothing on the kick)you have stereo with good phase coherency but are at the mercy of the player on how much kick makes it to tape. Try it. Hell, try everything. There is no one right way. If it sounds good to you, it is good.
