FireBox s/pdif in/out.. how does it work?

I'm not sure how to use the s/pdif on my presonus FireBox. Is it a special kind of signal, or can I just plug a regular RCA left and right into it? I've tried, but I can't get it to work. And I just stupid, or does it have to be a special kind of signal?

you'll need a analogue to digital convertor, or a pre amp with S/pdif output. and you'll need a S/pdif lead... which aren't too expensive, the last time i looked.

the way i understand it, S/pdif is a digital input/output, so it wants 1's and 0's. RCA (we call it phono over the pond) is analogue, so it wants a real electric circuit.

or something.

Why do you want to use it?
Do you already have a method of getting to Audio into your soundcard/PC?

If you have no real need of getting a digital signal out/in, then it seems moot.

The people that I know that use their spdif ports use them from their mixers to their soundcards. Doesn't it only give you a single stereo or mono channel once it's in the PC?

SPDIF is a stereo digital format. Each RCA connector (In and Out) carries two channels of data.

You can connect the SPDIF jacks to other gear that has SPDIF jacks, to pass audio digitally without going through conversion to analog. Or you can connect the SPDIF I/O to a converter to add another couple channels of analog I/O to your Firebox.
