Decent Mike Leads

Hi. I'm looking to get some new mic leads to upgrade my old Proel leads. Which would you recommend as being excellent quality for studio audio recording?

There's no difference between good and excellent when it comes to cable. Look for cables that have good connectors on them. That's where the real difference is.

I'd look for Mogami, Canare or Belden cable, with connectors by Neutrik or Switchcraft. If it comes down to it, make your own. Well worth the effort in my opinion.

Hi,

Get on ebay and search for GLS mic cables. I've got one and I use it all the time. Excellent quality and extremely cheap to buy. Plus unlike most ebay purchases they are satisfaction guaranteed.

The female connectors may be tight on some mics but I have always got mine to fit.

No matter who you get the cable from, test it with a cable tester. A multimeter is OK and tells you certain thins, but a cable tester with an "intermittant" function is hard to beat. I'm surprised at the failure rate/time for some current name brand cables and connectors. I know that "sh*t happens", but I'm still using a mic cables on stage that are about 30-years old---because they're in perfect working order, have never failed, and show now signs of failing. Out of the last 30 assorted mic cables I bought in the past two years, one failed with minimum use, one female connector (a name-brand mentioned above) had that d*mn-near-impossible-to-replace barrel screw* that holds the connector together disappear on another cable, and two worked fine with dynamic mics but hummed scarily with a phantom-powered condenser. Inspect and test your cables before you need them and still have time to redeeem them.

I have had no problems at all with GLS, Mogami, and Stdio Projects stuff.

*now widely substitutable with machine screws available in assortment at a hardware or dollar store near you. Not flush, but firm and functional.
