Loudness Look Here

Shoot me, shoot me, shoot me... I don't want to hear anymore really loud songs on the internet... I'll just turn it off if it's loud... Sorry, I can't take it anymore. Shit songs that are loud really piss me off... Stop it! Someone stop them from this madness. There should be a law against it... Who wants to start an anti-loud posse?

You should get a stereo with a volume dial/button. I have a few.

Yes, then I adjust the volume so it's lower, right? Nice and low with little dynamic and the sound of a pencil-depth vocal pinging at me? Yes, yes... good...

I think my cell phone was designed around really loud mp3s.....I took a mix at a "normal" volume onto my cell phone and now I can't hear it ring...

So it's not actually the loudness that is bothering you, it's the lack of dynamics. You may be listening to the wrong type of music.

So shit songs with a wide dynamic range are okay? How about great songs that are flat?

Well, I hear a lot of guys asking about making the mix loud. Then I go down to the mp3 clinic, and then death metal or punk comes blasting at me totally cranked and fucks up my brain. What will be left of home recording by 2010... Many spinning discs, flying through the air, and me with a shot gun, fucking blasting them.

bileshake will become famous soon enough
I agree, there's way too much over compressed bs out there. To support the punk and death crowd, they write their music to be heavy, fast and abrasive. But it's hard competition when every pop song out there is twice as loud and way over compressed. I miss the good old days of dynamics. I keep a separate mix of my own stuff uncompressed locked away hoping some day there will be an interest in good dynamic music. Yeah and maybe people will listen to full albums again.

power to the square wave mix!!! You'd hate my mixes then hehehehe I should make a tip of the hat to Zappas "black page" and call it, "black waveform" har har har... but then again, I write heavy music so maybe I'm not too terribly off base. har har

Golden,
Put down the Atari Age magazine, and play some Pitfall, you'll feel better.

gotta have a full album cant stand having just a "single" drives me nuts
techno tends to be over compressed and i find it gets really tiring to listen to. but then again im a rocker so even if it wasnt compressed to shite it would be tiering to listen to

Nofuckingshit!

Is it too much to ask for a group of musicians with common values, experiences, and goals to write 12 good songs a year?
