Help with mixers,,, please

Im totally confused on what should I get,,, I'm going to study recording at an institute,, and I want to have a mixer to practice with local bands ,,,,, If I start to study I wont be able to buy a mixer so I have to decide now,,, I want something capable of recording at least 16 channels or more,,,

From here my problem start,, as I'm a total newbie I don't know what should I get ,,, since I want a mixer that I can use about 3 years to 5 years till i can afford the money to upgrade my gear into a more professional stuff,,,

First of all, If I get an analog mixer,, what mixer is recommended to start in a more professional way? what else should I get to record any project? (except microphones any devise needed) What are the most common options? (not thinking about the prize, but having quality products)

If I get an analog mixer with a firewire port to record projects on PC like SONAR 6 (the one I have) does match professional standards?or its best only for home studio purposes?

Please help me

to start off with... what do you already have? Cause there is no point spending all your money on a mixer if you have no mics or cabling to go with it.

nah,, I just have two mics (one condenser and one dynamic) ,,, my problem it's not about the money,, since I have a regular job here in Japan,,, my problem is I don't know what to buy first,, what type of mixer etc.. but I have a goal, during this year I want to be able to record a band in a studio (there are many studios here in Japan in different ranges) with my equipment before I go to study recording,,, and also with the same equipment be able to do more and more practices with local bands and friend bands while I'm studing,,,,,

Ps: perhaps, I have Sonar 6 running on my PC if it helps as refference!
