What are you trying to calibrate? Just watch the meters on your dat to get the level.

i was trying to calibrate my DAT so when it reaches 0 my mixer reaches +12dbu. i read it from http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr9...structure.html

"If you set up a 1kHz line-up oscillator on your mixer and adjust its level to exactly 0VU on the mixer output meters, you can go into Record Monitor mode on your DAT machine, and then slowly increase its input level control until this -12dB mark is reached. (Due to the large gaps between calibration marks on a DAT, looking at the Margin readout is a far more accurate way to do this, as it normally changes in much smaller increments, such as 0.5dB.) At this point, where 0dB VU as indicated by the mixer is equal to -12dB relative to Full Scale on the DAT meter (0VU = -12dBFS), you've calibrated your DAT machine so that mixer meters just touch the top red +12dB VU LED as the DAT machine reaches 0dB."

Is it a 16 bit DAT? Anyway, thee is nothing wrong with doing this, but the VU meter on your mixer isn't as fast as the one on the DAT. You will find that after you do this, you will hit 0 on the dat without necessarily lighting up the +12 on the mixer.

But to answer your question, you can use a keyboard on a sine wave patch. Hit C6 (2 octaves above middle C) that is (close enough to) 1K.

If you have sound forge or wavelab, you can use the sythisizers in there to make a sine wave.

Don't you have the computer hooked up to the mixer? If you do, just play the sine wave into the mixer. (loop it so it doesn't stop)

You can find some test tones here:

If those don't suit you, do a google search for "1khz test tone".

The last thing you need to be worrying about right now is level calibration.

It's easier to visualize the signal flow if you say that you connect from the line out to the mixer. (follow the signal flow, it's less confusing)

Yes, you set the level so the meter reads 0db. Set the input of your DAT machine to read -12db.

Set the windows fader at unity (0), plug the output of your sound card into the mixer. Set the master fader on the mixer so the meters read 0db. now set the record levels on the DAT machine so the meters on the DAT machine read -12db.

ok so now isee. so to get the windows recording levels to -12db, do i have to sing into a mic to reach 0dbu on my mixer and watch the software meters and adjust it like that or do i adjust it while the sine wave is still playin because if its that way the sine wav is not even appearing in the meter screen of my software meter when i have windows set to analog mix

NO! There is no singing or microphones.

You are calibrating the DAT. There are no mics involved in that.

The software meters have nothing to do with it. Just play the sine wave out of the computer, into the mixer. You need to pay attention to the meters on the mixer and the meters on the DAT machine. Since you have a soundblaster, your software meters are going to be useless.
