vocal FX

I don't know if this is the right forum for this particular question. But has anyone listened to Deftones at all? How do you get that effect that is very commonly used on his voice? What plugins/filters/settings etc gets that sound?

Ecktronic is a Deftones connaisseur. Wait until he reads this. He'll be able to tell you what color shoes they were wearing during the recording.

It's been a long long time since I've heard a deftones song, but I think you might be talking about putting the vocal through a distortion pedal and lob off the eqs at the high and low? I seem to remembering them doing that a bit. Could be wrong tho.

Yeah, on some songs there's a distortion sound, but for his "clean" voice that's not exactly what I'm thinking about. There's a clean effect he uses that I'd be really intrigued about using.

I also remember him using a fast and high intensity chorus, or rotary speaker effect sometimes as well. (I'm trying to remember what they did from memory of several years ago lol)

lots of compression. Probably a normal compressed version of the vocal along with a heavily compressed version of the vocals. oo and obviously delay.

Layers of whispers and echo layers are used along with mild flange.
Listen carefully to the amount of layers that are on the vocals at times.
Its great.
Ive taken alot of influence from that production.

Use volume automation on every vocal to bring certain breaths out more, or to bring certain parts of the flanged vocal up etc. You get the idea.

On one of my last mixes I used 6 vocal tracks for 1 vocal recording.
reverse delay in stereo along with delays at different times and more. Its the subtletys that can make vocal mixes sound great.

Yeah the rotary sound is used, but not alot.
Its more the mild flange (along with the other effects that I mentioned) that make that vocal sound.

Thanks for the tips guys. Now that I listen to it I hear a lot of those things. I never paid much attention to what exactly effects may be making it but thanks again.

this is more along the lines of what I was talking about. This is a band that chino produced music for your ears

and that's more about what I was I talking about btw.

From what I can tell it sounds like slight distortion/flange/high compression.. about right?

it's been forever since I've listened to the deftones, they were actually pretty good. I'll have to dig some cds of them up some time.

I hardly listen to them, but they just came out with a fairly new cd, and the production on it was absolutely amazing. Some of the best ideas to model after.

Flange, compression, mild distortion, delay, and very nice pre amp and vocal mic.
Yeah thats about it.

Can you hear the flange effect has been automated or either a chorus effect comes in and out at times. Pretty nice. The snare sample sucks ass though.

Did I forget to mention reverb?
But the delay is more prominent than the reverb. Automate the delay volume so its not obvious.
For example when a vocal pauses for a brief moment you would want to bring the volume of the delay effect down.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on, and post a sample.

Eck

Just out of curiousity - would you mind showing a sample of how that came out?
