Gibson Melody Maker Dual Pickup
I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these. Shit, for $399, how can you go wrong?
I'm thinking "Vintage Sunburst." The other options are black or white, and the white doesn't look too bad, either (although I'm not normally a fan of white guitars.) notCardio, if you're reading, that Vintage Sunburst looks a lot like the tobacco burst. BTW, the single coils are not P-90s. I don't know what they are, but the close-up pics you can find on Musicians' Friend indicate that they're the size of standard single-coils. The pickguard surrounds the PUs so that they appear to be the size of P-90s.

Yeah, I would go with the sunburst, too, but whatever floats your boat.
They are about the size of a standard strat/tele single coil, but that's not what they sound like. Much closer to a P-90. I guess I should say that's not what mine sounded like. I have no idea how the new ones stack up. As tempted as I am, I think I'm going to hold off and see if they come out with a doublecut version. Then I'll have to get it. Right now, there are too many other things in line ahead of it. Next time I get to a store, I'll have to try one though. BTW, feel free to mod the crap outa this one. ![]()

I am really curious about what those single-coils sound like in a guitar with a set neck and thin body.

"Honey, what's in those boxes?" "Oh, just a couple of really, really cheap guitars. I thought I told you about that." "No, you did not." "Well, let's have a look. (rustle, rustle, rip) Ah! There, what do you think?" "Umm...whatever, they're OK, I guess...they look an awful lot alike." "Oh, yeah! Same guitar, different color. Take your favorite and I'll keep the other." " "

I'm thinking that it could sound pretty interesting - pickups with a lot of tone (not necessarily much gain, though) in a guitar with a lot of sustain.

Like I've said before
mine freakin' rocked! (Hmmm, maybe I do need one...)
Mine was a single pickup, so I don't know about the neck position. Actually, being a single cut, there theoretically should be more mass, therefor more sustain. But I'm sure any difference in wood would be a greater variable. I don't know why, but I thought mine was mahogany. Eh, it's been 30+ years. It's obviously going to totally depend on the amp and pedals, though. The thing I remember most about its sound was bite. It had a really really agressive bite. It would be really cool if the new ones were the same. ZB can be our guinea pig. Tell your wife you've been elected. ![]()

Something to think about
Those single coils might not be the same size as Fender-type single coils, so if you don't like the pickups and wanted to change them you might have to route out....
Never mind. ![]()
