VoiceWorks Compression?

I’m using a presonus 10 channel firepod.

My question is would a vocal processor like the TC Helicon Voice Works serve as a compressor/gate for recording any instrument? For instance, can I use it to compress the initial signal during recording vocals/guitars, and then again for vocal effects during mixing? How do I do this? If I’m way off please help. thanks
