Check out Yorkville YSM-1's. Made in Canada and under $300 US for sure.

I knew someone would say Yorkvilles. :-) Also, can we all say "used?" I'm sure that $300 would get a decent set of used active monitors. Can't help you with the Denon question. But if it has decent specs and sounds clean it should do the job.

Peace, Jim

Cool

Hey, I've got the Tannoy Reveals (passive). Im using a Kenwood reciever for power. Awesome, clean sound. The key is not to change monitors (ever)........and to play your CDs through them so you can compare levels and mixes with professional recordings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wink

Agree. Tannoys, flat , true and pristine. t-jun-kee's advice is excellent too. Get to know your monitors and how the music translates. Above all, use your ears, get them tested, protect them - they are and ALWAYS will be the best and most revered pieces of equipment in "your rack" and they will NEVER become obsolete or out of date unless you abuse them.

Yo Funky Funky Funky:

The Yorkville monitors are playing in my studio and they are just wonderful, especially when you consider the price.

108.75 pezzutos EACH. Yea, verily, there are probably better monitors but you said less that 300 pezzutos was your target.

As for Tannoy, all I know is people love them too but for years Tannoy was found in Meijers supermarket and the goods were junky Mr. Funky. But, now, according to some of my hi-fi expert friends, Tannoy builds a very good monitor.

People have mentioned that Yorkville stuff is made in China? Well, the plant is in Canada and I keep hearing that many other products by Yorkville are also very good. I'm going to buy a Yorkville direct box just for fun. I bought the Yorkvile Apex 430, [the cheaper mic] and it too is very cool.

Sometimes it's pretty tough to get to hear the gear with your ears; so, once in a while we all take a chance on mid-priced gear. Most places will take returns with a minimum re-stocking fee. Always pays to ask before you drop the dinero.

Wasn't there a dance called the Funky Chicken a while back?

Have fun,
Green Hornet

For everyone's info...

Yorkville is NOT made in China -- 100% Canadian...
(every purchase comes with slab of back bacon to prove it!)

Bruce

PS - I'm kidding about the back bacon - don't go writing to them complaining if you didn't get it!!!

this can be interpreted like you are going to shell out $700 in total. In that case a pair of Tannoy Actives could be an alternative.

Otherwise, listen to what the others have said.

Event 20/20 passive sell for about $299 pair and they come highly recommended by sonusman and others on this site. I'm surprised no one has mentioned them yet.

Question Events speakers

How good are the Event 20/20's compared to the Alesis Monitor One's? I have the Alesis speakers, but looking to upgrade...

Yo Joker: [Watch out for Batman]

I sold my Alesis I speakers when I plugged in my Yorkville YSM-1 speakers.

As Bruce has said, Alesis makes make good products but monitors are not one of them. They were ok but sometimes ok isn't good enough.

Try to catch an earful of whatever you decide to upgrade to.

Green Hornet

PS Bruce: Made in Canada is great. I'll have to look inside the grill of my Yorkvilles and check for the bacon.

Thumbs up

I just got a pair of Yorkville's and am in LOOOOOOVE. They are GORGEOUS sounding - I hear stuff in songs that I've played millions of times that I never quite got before. Beautiful stuff.

I A/B'd them against Tannoy Reveals (passive) and Event-PS6's, but they gave me the best bang for the buck. I use them with a Yorkville amp (CR-5 - got a great deal on it and the combo sounds beautiful)

This is all just my experience - and they are my first real monitors - but I love 'em to pieces.

On a side note, I'd like to thank everyone here for helping me put together my studio (at least as much as it is so far). From more or less nothing, I'm now up to a relatively new PC with a Delta 66 (just got it today - not plugged in yet!) and a SB/PC128 (for Midi/aux audio) connected to a Mackie 1604 mixer for routing in and out, plus the CR-5 and Yorkville YSM-1's. For mics I just have an Apex 420 (NICE mic - going to buy another) and a couple of SM58's, but I'm getting there.

The only thing I'm not happy about is my keyboard - I bought it before I started coming here and I doubt I'd get it if I could do over - it is a Yamaha PSR-740 - there are some nice sounds on it, but it really has a lot of gimmicy features on it that aren't any use and cost me money that I could have used to buy, say that other Apex 420 and a nice pre-amp/compressor... and maybe a DAT recorder.)

Any mistakes I made are my own fault - but you guys get a lot of the credit for my good choices

monitors

ok, Yorkville monitors (with or without bacon) seem to come highly recommended.. From what I'm seeing, they're better than the comparably priced Alesis and Event.

So, the big question is, where's the best place to buy them?

Better than the Events? I doubt it.

No one has answered your question about the Monitor One vs. Event comparison so I thought I would. There is no comparison...the Events win without a doubt. I'm not familiar with Yorkville, and they come very highly recommended, so go A/B them, but the Monitor Ones can't compete with Events.
