Crazy Idea - slitting tape

Anyone ever slit tape? Crazy... Lets just suppose that you had a 1" MRL tape that you did not want to sell. You could make a jig and slit it into two 1/4" mrl tapes and a 1/2" MRL.

Then your 1/4" and 1/2" would be calibrated to the same standard. (not that we really care about that)

Or how about a 2" MRL....

I understand that's how they do it in manufacturing. The tape starts out as big wide sheets, much wider than 2''.
It'd need to be precision slitting gear though as the width tolerance would have to be held very close, especially for narrow track recording and not jamming in the guides through being a fraction too wide.
I've seen boxes of 2" tape waiting to be thrown out and the thought crossed my mind too.
I guess getting hold of the slitting gear the tape companies use might be an idea.

Cheers Tim.

Maybe would be best thing at this juncture.

Makes you wonder though where all that Quantegy equipment will end up. If its anything like a military installation the millions of dollars of equipment can be found dumped near the rear perimeter by the fence. Just keep walking past the signs that say “AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY BEYOND THIS POINT” (I get a rush out of that every time I walk past it for some reason).

If you look carefully you’ll eventually find it hidden in the tall prairie grass. I have about 3/4 of an F-4 Phantom jet fighter put together in my garage from these outings to the old Air Force base I grew up on.

I've been working on it since 1994. Just be patient… and “Endeavor to persevere.”

I've done a lot of experimenting, but have not tried that. Seems as long as you had infeed and outfeed rollers to control the runout, it should work. Maybe use a carbide slitting blade at high RPM's? May turn out to be a moneymaker for you!
