Weird freakin' lyrics!

Old BOC...Astronomy...
Have you ever read this stuff?

Ya ya ya. I know...I know.
I know...this is the "songwriting" forum, but it was either here or the Cave!

Quote:
The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reason tends to fly away

Like lesser birds on the four winds
Like silver scrapes in May
Now the sands become a crust
And most of you have gone away

Come Susy dear, let's take a walk
Just out there upon the beach
I know you'll soon be married
And you want to know where the winds come from

Well it's never said at all
On the map that Carrie reads
Behind the clock back there you know
At the four winds bar

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Four winds at the four winds bar
Two doors locked and windows barred
One door let to take you in
The other one just mirrors it
Hey, hey, hey, hey

In hellish glare and inference
The other one's a duplicate
The queenly flux, eternal light
Or the light that never warms (repeat twice)

The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Miss Carrie nurse and Suzy dear
Would find themselves at the four winds bar

It's the nexus of the crisis
The origin of storms
Just the place to hopelessly
Encounter time and then came me
Hey, hey, hey, hey

Call me Desdenova, eternal light
These gravely digs of mine
Will surely prove a sight
And don't forget my dog, fixed and consequent

Astronomy...a star (repeat indefinitely)
I mean, even given the context that this song was released SEPARATE from the concept album it was to originally be released on, it's still hard to make sense of....

Cool song though!

This was one of those days when Dharma and company were writing lyrics after consuming copious amounts of acid and 'shrooms....

And since everyone else was at that time, it made sense to them...

bloodhound gang lyrics are goofy.. but it's more of an immature weird just for the sake of being weird rather than a witty weird or a creepy weird in my opinion.

Yeah. BOC is one of the most uderappreciated bands of all time. They did some brilliant stuff. Astronomy is one, IMHO.

i would hope that none of you get lyrical inspiration from the bloodhound gang. don't get me wrong, i liked them at one point...but then i turned 13 and it got lame.

as for the lyrics, sometimes weird ones work. be careful though, it's extremely easy to make ambient lyrics sound corny so use caution. study some poetry and be creative.

They put on an excellent show here in Virginia Beach last summer. I took the ole lady, the boy and a bunch of his buddies to see it and we had a great time. It was the third time I saw them and they are complete pros on stage.

There's a line in the song Magna of Illusion from that same album that I've always loved...
Behind closed eyes
Realize your sight

Lyrically the entire album is a gold mine. Good stuff!

Also have a peek at the words for my song Decomposition (see link below). I got a very positive critique from a popular Japanese poet for that one.

my dos centavos

I'm an instrumentalist and, as such, I usually listen to instrumental music but, for my money, the true master of obscure lyrics is still Gary Numan. Even his new Industrial/Gothic/Darkwave stuff he has released in recent years has deep meaning with lyrics like,
In his darkness, a grave waits for you at heaven's gate.
or
Don't let the dark shine on me, I am the ghost that reminds death of you.
Pretty chilling stuff.

He is the only one I know who can get away with merging haunting melodies with such amorphous lyrics.

Lyrics like:
The wrekage of a hero lies broken in the corner and everyone pretends he likes to live that way,
or,
I am the clown who forgot how to lauph.
have a way of evoking the emotions. Another one of my favorites is,
Down in the park where the chant is death, death, death until the sun cries morning.
Believe me, they do have a meaning.

Other bands or artists I have heard just seem to ramble nonesense and call it a work of art. But then again, what I think is gibberish, somebody else might think is poetry

Yeah I totally agree about Numan, he writes some wacked stuff. My favorite line from down in the park:

Quote:
Oh look there's a rape machine
I'd go outside if it'd look the other way
Wouldn't believe the things they do
I was lucky to meet Numan in person a few times. The most shocking thing to me was how much of a proper British gentleman he is.

An all time lyrical fav of mine though is Joy Division. Ian Curtis had the self-absorbed, self-torment, ultra-weird personal shit like no other. Even after not listening to a particular song of theirs for a few years I can one night find myself unable to sleep because I'm ruminating on the meaning of a line of his. e.g. New Dawn Fades

Quote:
A change of speed, a change of style
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied, though you forget
Different colours, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless so plain to see
A loaded gun won't set you free
So you say
here's one that always confabulates me - Interzone

Quote:
I walked through the city limits
Someone talked me in to do it
Attracted by some force within it
Had to close my eyes to get close to it
Around a corner where a prophet lay
Saw the place where she'd a room to stay
A wire fence where the children played
Saw the bed where the body lay
And I was looking for a friend of mine
And it gets even better. Go check this out and I'm sure you'll come back a somewhat changed person...
http://joydivision.homestead.com/lyrics.html

some of my great loves by Ian are Passover, The Eternal and Decades. Really primally strong stuff. If you have never listened to their music then you should. they may not have been the best musicians and they were depressing but they had a way of drawing you into their world like very few other bands could do. Listen to The Eternal first, it's so morbidly beautiful.
