It's kind of like a warped and nerdy version of "Tool Time"!!!
Where's nerdy the tool girl in thick rimmed glasses and short-shorts?? ![]()

Geez, they will never get of us… all we need is a roll of clear tape and some rust.
The digital world shrieks in horror… ![]()

I think the eeriest part of that program is when he's in the BBC museum playing the light entertainment tape from Nazi Germany (my German isn't good enough to understand it unfortunately). Although tape jockeying the Channel 4 logo was cool as well.
You can find some interesting things by searching YouTube for Studer and Otari. Here's a neat clip of someone showing off an A807... in its native German. I didn't know it could do the reverse thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdGIwZ3IgN8 Tascam seems under-represented. Anyone want to fix that? |

Recording on rust is ok. But the rust itself has to be treated with silicone so that the tape isn't abrasive to the heads. The german magnetophone company perfected the first machine to record onto plastic tape in 1936 and although there were a few formidable electrical problems to overcome they managed very well. and by 1937 they perfected their first broadcast quality machine of the day the Tongschrieber, which was a fantastic machine by the standards of the day and it is good to see at least 1 surviving model.
Hope this info helps Keith |
