VS880EX Solution?

Yes its me agian that jerk with the VS880EX ha.

But i think i have found something i may pic kup that may solve some of my problems...

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...sku=C184-30500

If i were to purchase this cable. Would it cut down the need to dump tracks via re-recording each one to my laptop.

In theory it sounds liek i should be able to hook my VS to my laptop with this little "wonder cable" and just pull each wav file into my daw and start to work....

I know its cumbersome but it is a relative more cost effective fix then buying some M-Audio product or something of the like.

Any Comments.

Im going to go strait to roland as well to see what they say about it. Ill let you know what i hear from them.

Greetings / Salutations!,

Thank you for your inquiry. Song data contained on a VS-880EX harddrive is stored in a proprietary format. It will not be possible to access it in the way that you propose. However, if you transfer the tracks to your laptop in digital form via SP/DIF, there will be no compromise in audio quality.

Best Regards / Sincèrement vôtre,
Roland Canada Music / Roland Canada Musique

And there i have it.

Thanks.

If you go over to the VS Planet, in the 2480 forum, you may find that someone has written a program that can read and import your 880EX backup disks directly into a shareware recording program called 'Reaper.' I don't know the details yet, or whether or not Roland has seen fit to stamp out this little bit of unauthorized wizardry, but it is worth a look. Roland should've released a program to do this themselves a long time ago, imo.

That's a neat cable. I just bought an external hard drive case which is basically the same thing, without the cover. I would have rather bought that cable. But then I did pay only $20 after rebate.

The transfer they mention is in truth, a digital copy. I use optical spdif. 2 tracks at a time with midi synch.

what kind of interface or card do you use for the spdif input? Is like an external device or is it built into your sound card?

Alll i have is a laptop with a mic in, and an m-audio fast track USB.

But if i can find something better, ill ditch the fast track its only good for guitars and vox. and its a little sketchy at that.

It can be built into either one. You will need more than you have to do it.SPDIF just looks like a single RCA stereo type plug but it carries a digital stereo pair on one cable. If I were using a laptop I might look into one of the edirol usb 2.0 interfaces if I were trying to do it for the least cost. If you have a desktop then you can look at one of the many PCI card that will do it for you. There are tons of interfaces out there and more added daily it seems. I use a motu traveler but that might be overkill if you just need SPDIF.
