Question DIY cassette tapes?

Probably a long shot, but I'm wondering if it's possible to construct your own tapes from cheapo cassette shells and loose tape for use in portastudios?

I have a Tascam Porta two High-speed 4 track which requires Chrome, High Bias, Type II, 60 min tapes. These are difficult to come by these days, and when I do, they're generally pricey (the high-speed means 60 min tape only records 15 mins).

I can see the main problem would be finding the correct width tape; I think cassette tape is 3/8 inch, unlike the more common 1/4 inch tape like on open reel machines. But anyway, just thought I'd ask the experts none-the-less...

Any thoughts? Experiences? etc?

Much appreciated, thanks!

Arrow I just get my media here:...

& that's a sure thing. It's not too pricey, either, though there's a shipping charge. If you're intercontinental (non-US), then this link is probably of no help. (Sorry!)

In Austrailia one of your best bets is The Church. Casettes are still very common in Christian ministry. Search the web for church supply houses in Austrailia and NZ. You should find sources for normal and Type II cassettes.
