More VTB-1 Help...

Okay...i got the trs cord for my vtb-1 mic preamp. I got the trs cable plugged in the insert slot in the back of my vtb-1...and i got a emu 1212m soundcard. I tried all 1/4 slots in my soundcard they all fit perfectly but when iwent on adobe audition to try to record nothing came like the mic was never plugged up. Everythings plugged up properly to my understanding...anybody can help me out?

The "insert" is for running an effects loop. You want to use the "line out" to go to your soundcard.

More info: What mic? How is it connected to the pre? If the mic is a condenser, is the phantom power turned on? Is the pre plugged in? What is the gain setup on the pre and is the meter showing signal from the mic? Exactly what type of cable is going to the soundcard? What input on the soundcard? Is your software recognizing the soundcard? Are the recording inputs enabled in the software?

What mic? Studio Project C1 Condenser
How is it connected to the pre? Through the XLR studio project LITZ cable
If the mic is a condenser, is the phantom power turned on? Yes...
Is the pre plugged in? yes
What is the gain setup on the pre and is the meter showing signal from the mic? gain is on 25..the meters arent goin' up like theres no mic there.
Exactly what type of cable is going to the soundcard? a trs cable
What input on the soundcard? On my soundcard theres a 1/4 L & R input and a 1/4 L & R output...i tried all of them still isn't working.

Is your software recognizing the soundcard? I think so since its listed on adobe audition...
Are the recording inputs enabled in the software? idk lol..dont know how to enable them

I've never used audition, but I suspect it could be a software routing problem. Check the manual. It should explain how to route the soundcard inputs to specific channels in the software.

Theres this thing called E-MU patchmix...a program that came with my soundcard. I think the settings on their got alot to do with it. But patchmix is sooooo confusing for me. I don't understand it at all...but i think thats it its not set for microphones but i dont kno how to make it set for mics.

Burnbox is on a distinguished road
If you're not getting a meter reading, I'd be looking at the preamp first.

Make sure phantom power is in (lit up), make sure the line in button is out (not lit up), make sure the meter button is in (lit up), crank the gain to 60 dB.

If the meter still doesn't show anything it could be the cable or the mic.

The insert on the VTB1 can be used as an output. It would come right after the High Pass filter and bypass the tube drive. You just have to wire the TRS jack accordingly.

There is a guide on our website that shows how to do this at:
VTB1 Wire Guide

It sounds like you are having issues with the software, and not the VTB1, but if PMI Audio can help you, just let me know. You can always call our tech department, but in the end, they can only assist you with making sure the VTB1 is working properly.

Maybe you can get some assistance with the software from the manufacturer or the dealer where you bought it...

Theres another built in soundcard or w.e in my computer..its called C-Media Wave Device..that has a microphone volume control. What i'm trying to figure out is why the emu doesnt have that like it wasn't programmed for a microphone.

You need to go into your control panel on your computer and open up Sounds and Audio Devices. There are five tabs at the top that say Volume, Sounds, Voice, Audio, Hardware.

Under the audio section, make sure your sound card is in fact showing up on both sound playback and sound recording.

Under the Volume tab, click the advanced tab, this will open up the master volume window. Under options, click properties...Make sure you check line input and microphone...then these should appear for you....

And I'd suggest disabling the built in soundcard through your Computer BIOS... leaving these active is nothing but trouble...

Depends on the computer... some will prompt on boot to press a certain key to enter setup... most will respond to pressing the delete key while booting... Once your in setup navigate the different pages until you find the on-board audio and disable it

Your gonna have to start at the begining..Setting up, maintaining and running a DAW requires a fairly intense knowledge of how your pc and operating system work. Not to mention your sound card, drivers, interface and finally your recording hardware..This "car" has no automatic transmission, you are going to have to learn how to drive it (and fix it unless you are rich enough to afford a tech). A few tips here won't get you where you are going. Read up on pc basics, get the manuals for your equipment (software and hardware) and be prepared...it takes a WHILE..if you want a more plug in and go situation you might consider one of those all in one stand alone recorders (yamaha, zoom etc...)

Good Luck,
Ray

ps..you are not running a mic level signal into the emu if you are using an outboard pre..the outboard pre make it LINE level so look for line in's, not mic ins

Both playback and recording should be set to E-DSP Wave [D400] in you control panel settings.

You need to get your head around Patchmix. It's a virtual mixer and if it's not configured properly then nothing will reach Adobe Audition. It's like not having the cable plugged in.

Patchmix should have a default session that you can use to get started. Try looking for the new session button somewhere in the top right corner.

Best of luck.

Barn Owl.

There shouldn't be a "microphone" input for the emu. You should be going from your preamp to the "line in" on the emu.

For fucks sake, does anybody ever read a manual anymore?
You can't just plug shit in randomly in the hopes that it will work. I mean you CAN, but that's how you blow expensive electronic shit up.
