VS-840 external effects

After not doing any mixdown with my VS-840GX for quite a long time, I am having trouble sending tracks to external effects and recording them on other tracks. I managed to do this for tracks 1 and 2 and record them to tracks 3 and 4 (using virtual tracks 2 on 3 and 4), but I cannot get this to work now. I get either a feedback loop, or the effects come back in mono and are not even recorded.

Can anyone give me some tips on settings, etc.? I've done this before with no problems, but I can't for the life of me get it to work now!

Problem solved! I took my VS-840 apart and used De-Oxit to clean all of the switches and circuit board connectors, and now it's working! I had never had trouble routing to external effects before, so I begn to suspect equipment malfunction after I spent hours trying to get it to work. It seems to be working fine now and I'm back on track mixing the tracks for our band's (http://www.pineygrovereamblers.com) upcoming CD.
