I want to create a decal or sticker to put on the body of a guitar, but I want to be able to remove it by just peeling it off later with no damage to the finish. I'm not looking for an image, I know what I want, but I would have to 'sticker-ize' the picture myself.
Is this do-able? And before you get all 'no you di-int' about putting a sticker on, there's an ugly grain pattern that I want to cover. But I realize not everyone would think it was ugly, so if I wanted to sell it later, or just changed my mind, I want it to be removable.

Peel it off later, huh? What, you got commitment issues?
Looks like you want a static cling vinyl logo. (http://www.agisolutions.com/CustomStaticCling.htm is the first thing Google spat out but I'm sure you'll be able to do better by putting some time in) I had a few halloween cartoon bat window decals like this this on my acoustic back in the early 90s, didn't do any harm. Later on I just went all out and totally plastered 3 cheap-o's I got when I had first joined the military with all kinds of non-removable hardcore band stickers (probably to get it out of my system). I think it gives'em character, but it kinda dates them to that period in my development. |

As a matter of interest, what image do you have in mind? Sorry I can't be of more help.

FOr $25 I got vinyl window lettering cut at kinkos. I am pretty sure it's way cheaper just to get a rectangular image on sticker paper. YOu can take the stuff off. Well, off of a fender type finish. I stuck it to a black squier and will probably put the same sticker on my strat.
There are instructions for getting it off windows in the package. Just takes razor blade and acetone. Just kidding.

If I get it, I would want to cover the swoosh (which is in the center of the lower bout, between the tailpiece and the endpin) with the picture of Duane Allman playing his guitar in a bathroom. Probably my favorite picture ever.

It wouldn't be rectangular, though. I'd cut out the profile.

Just a word to the wise (or less than wise, as the case may be); vinyl will eat away a nitrocellulose finish. If your guitar is finished with nitro, keep vinyl away from it at all costs.

Nuther word to the wise,
If sunlight fades the finish of your guitar. It will not fade the finish under the sticker. This can end up looking kinda stoopid when you take the sticker off.

Thanks for the concern
but it's thick gloss poly.
It'll probably never see the sun, either. Once I get the basement done, neither will I. I doubt if I'm getting it anyway. Got a line on something else that I'd rather have. Now, if that falls through... ![]()

Can I fade a guitar with a poly finish, or will it just get all yellow-y?
Dark tobacco sunburst (fades to black).
