The Mastering Guys Say... Har-bal sucks?

Hi,

This post is in regards to negative comments made about Harbal here at the Home recording forum & Gearslutz...( yep, Bob Katz also posts that Har-bal is crap, in not so many words.)

First off: From a DIYer home recorder's point of view, I say it's an OUTSTANDING product! They should keep up the good work! Har-bal has literally put eyes on an audio curve and shows where problem areas are in a mix.

It's not meant to be a "Curve stealing software" as ill-informed Mr Katz and others here have stated. It's analysis software to exmaine & tweak audio curves. Yeah, Masterin'.... it's all about listening, right.....

Well, some of us don't have a great room or $$$ monitors $$$, or "Golden" ears. Therefore it's an asset for most of us home recording folks for a product such as this.

After reading some of these posts around here provided by some of these "mastering guys that get paid", I most certainly do NOT wish to give out hard earned cash off to a bunch of Pompus Jack-Offs who smile in our face all the while cutting down our "bad mixes" after we've, the consumer has left the room.

Secondly:: I never realized until recently just how rotten and narcissistic most people in the music/recording business actually are .(namely, some of these "Mastering Guys".) Infact, I found the comment(S) made to be VERY unprofessional and just plain "A$$hole-ish".

Unlike most of you uh... "pros", Bob Katz is suppose to be highly respected name in the biz with a book deal to boot, so you'd think he'd have more class about conducting himself. He probably should have stopped at, I don't har-bal...

Thirdly: I don't normally go to these types of forums, But recently I was looking for some additional info on Har-bal & Mastering and stumbled on to the BBS site.

THE BURNING QUESTION::::

What I'd like to know is.... what are these "Pro Mastering Guys" doing in a HOME RECORDING FORUM ANYWAYS??? Seems to me if they were legit, they would be too busy WORKING instead of hanging around in a forum day in, day out letting everyone know how great they.... All the while cutting on people shitty mixes and "prosumer" gear. Uh, "HOME RECORDING FORUM IS THE KEYWORD HERE"

On a personal note, Sounds to me like some of these Uh, "PROS" have self-esteem issues. I guess it seems fitting due to the fact most of these " golden ears" look like major dorks who more than likely have a VERY hard time getting women... as well as respect outside the Studio..

Being the "Mastering Man", must make them feel worthy.... something they probably DON'T get in the real world.

Shit, how many times can you uh...digitally re-master Foghat's greatest hits anyways???

I very much appreciate any pros who take the time to visit here and help us out. That said, I am unfamiliar with Harbal. But it's a tool that might work for some people and not for others. In general, any tool in inexperienced hands generates poor results.

And you're taking this way too seriously. That kind of vitriole should be reserved for important arguments, like Mayo v. Miracle Whip.

Hey retard,

If you buy Har-bal you are giving your hard-earned cash to a pompous jack-off who thinks your mixes can be helped by a magic box, and your mixes will still suck after you pay.

That's a whole different issue from the whip vs. mayonnaise thang. That, I think, would entail the use of a GP Sonic Pouponizer.

The marketing guy should say the name sucks. At first glance it looks like something a cat coughs up.

Did you see That Thing You Do? The too clever band name was, phonetically, The Wonders, but it was spelled Oneders so they were always getting introduced as the Oh-Knee-Ders.

Well the last time I re-mastered Foghat was in 1999, see:
http://www.foghat.com/the-music-pages/foghat17.php

Last year I worked with Craig MacGregor (bassist) on his son's band Comic Book Heroes. Does that count as "re-mastering"?

I, for one, respect the opinion of the MEs here. Well, the ones that actually have a business and stream of clients, such as Mr. Masteringhouse and Massive. You know, usually more knowledgeable than I.

Well, the cap'n surely speaks like someone who has had no success in the industry and is plainly jealous of those who do have experience. I guess he just does not understand how peoples experience and abiloities are all relative.

As for Har-Bal, I will never know now whether it truly sucks or not because the cap'n has managed to make it so I will never even want to give it a try. Oh well, he probably did me a favor and is going to allow me to keep the 10 minutes of my life that it would have taken me to find out that it is a useless tool for me. Of course 9 of those minutes would probably be finding the website, downloading the demo, installing it and actually loading it into a project.

That's fine, John. You're an audio engineer, not a chef. You're allowed to put whatever you want on your sandwiches.

If you were a chef and not an audio engineer, though, you'd probably perfer mayonnaise but like Har-Bal.

yeah, but what if he works for a competitor of Har-Bal and came here just to convince us not to try it. Now we are following their plan and that company has succeeded in disparaging it's rival so easily to the all too simple minded lemmings who believed it...

oh well, could happen.

That's what I'd do if I were in business

I tried Har-Bal; didn't work well for me. Looks interesting in theory, but it didn't work well in practice for me.

I'm not a "mastering guy" per se, but I'll do some quick stuff for clients that can't afford "real mastering". Har-Bal shoulda been able to get me closer to "real" records; it didn't.
