EQ for Idiots

And now for an intimate glimpse into the obvious...What is the best way to hunt for problem frequncies in a sound. For example you track a quick one of acoustic guitar with the famous 'TAK' quack sound and you want to try and reduce the 'quack'. Track is on HD thru Cubase 3.7. You know the bulk of it's probably around 3.5k or 2.2k., so you start with a narrow q and a steep cut and star sweeping around... 2 hours later you are still the owner of the cheesiest sounding guitar track in the world and completely frustrated. Is there a quicker way, or am I trying to do the 'undoable'. Also does anybody have a recommendation for a good general audio engineering reference. I've got Craig Anderton's and others but when it comes to studio most stuff is either old, way too simple or way to specific. Thanx in advance.

You have to start with the right mic, mic placement, and playing technique to get the best possible sound down first...what guitar and mic are you using and how and where are u micing it....maybe with more info someone may be able to help..

Do what Gidge said and then if that doesn't help, post an mp3 for us/me to hear(only after you gave a detailed description of how you acheived your sound.
