Computer Upgrade..

I'm thinking about throwing down some cash to get a new computer. Right now i'm running on a Powerbook G4 with a 1.5GHZ PowerPC Processor, and 1.5 GB of RAM. I was thinking about upgrading to a RECORDING ONLY computer.

I'm stuck between either getting an iMac G5, with a 2.33GHZ Core 2 Duo, and about 2GB of RAM

OR

Holding out and saving a little more and getting a G5 with a 2.33 Quad Xeon Processor, and about 1GB of RAM.

Is the G5 and overkill? I'll probably have to save for another half a year / year if I get that one. I'm not sure though. Running on the Powerbook that I am now I get kind of cluttered when running more than 1 instance of Drumagog along with reverbs / etc. I get the CPU running out message on bigger projects, just kind of sucks.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks dudes! Peace!

there is no such thing as an imac g5 core 2 duo. Its one or the other either, C2D imac is intel based or G5 imac is the older PPC based one.

I would hold out for the mac pro (the xeon based one) but also bear in mind that you will need updates to all your software and plugins to make them natively compatible with intel based macs

I know it's not a G5 processor i'm just used to calling it that, haha. Would the iMac be a really good upgrade, or like you said you definitely stick it out for the Mac Pro?

The Imac would be a good upgrade, but the Mac Pro would be a great upgrade.

Agreed. You'll love having 4 CPUs. I'm running a quad G5, and it's pretty amazing. I'd expect the new quad C2D machines to be similarly stunning.
