Where does the newbie go?

Hello!

I just found this site and am looking for tips and guidelines for recording and mixing on my PC. I have some experience but am all self taught and looking for more help in this area.

This thread is creeping up on 100,000 posts so its not realistic for me to read all of them anytime soon. Can anyone point me to anything that is fairly broad in this category?

Perhaps someone has already put together a list of must do's and don'ts. As well as tips on things that I'll need to pay attention to.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I was just checking out that article. Looks great.

One of my biggest deficiencies is knowing what tool to use where.

Even simple ones like compression and EQ. I know they are often overused and am concious that they need to be used sparingly. But getting aclimated to what to use where is overwhelming....

So far I have been mixing with nearly nothing and getting results that I am impressed with but I know they can be better.

Alot of it is trial and error, partly because a 'good' mix is both:
1) Largely subjective
2) Secondary to the music/song/performance itself

And trying out different things can produce really good results. I also find this the best way to expand your home studio; as you master various aspects you also identify week spots in your set-up.

Go read tweak's guide over at tweakheadz.com. Just don't ask any newbie questions on their forum or BlueBear will yell at you and tell you how he's forgotten more about audio than you'll ever know.

A mentor to me many years ago used to say something to the effect of "Ed, learning to produce great sounding audio is a matter of trying a bunch of things you will never do again!"

Wise man or wise ass?

Considering most people don't learn much at all about audio, Bruce is quite correct!

Wise man. I learned that as "Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment."

Old School

I know that we seem to be in an age where anything printed on paper is considered prehistoric and that book reading is actually considered a handicap. I say bull...loney; there's no substitute for a good book .

Check out this post for some excellent printed material to sink you teeth into:
