I've heard a lot worse.

Doesn't sound too bad to me until around 12 or 13 seconds when that nasty distorted guitar comes in. It just doesn't sound good with it playing in the background.

Get a better amp.

You can try to mess with the EQ, mic placement, add FX, etc. but I doubt you would get a tone you're happy with (I've been there!)

The sound I'm hearing makes me think the amp just sounds like shit. There's not much you can do for that except get a new amp.

It's a shitty amp tone.

Shitty amp tones can happen any number of ways. In this particular case, it sounds like the gain was cranked way too high and there's some sort of presence added to it that sounds like ice picks on a chalk board ... like a presence knob on the amp cranked all the way up, or one of those sonic masturbators.

Just work on getting a better amp tone. You may need a better amp to start with, or it could just be a matter of working / finessing the one you have.

I'm almost convinced the guitars are of the POD variety.

No. It's your tone. Mic placement has so little to do with it. Seriously, thousands of professional records have been made by sticking a 57 against the speaker. It ain't rocket surgery. Your tone sucks. Work with it and make it better, then come back and let us hear the results.

I've never heard a Marshall sound so bad, but then again I haven't played every Marshall amp.

You might be able to get a usable tone by messing with the EQ and whatnot on the amp, but if you can't then you need a new amp!
