Mixing through a board vs. DAW?

I have a Mackie 32.8 Analog Console and I have only been using it for tracking and monitoring.

Basically I run my inputs into it and Direct Outs into my Converters.

I have been using Nuendo 2's Mixer to take care of the rest.

I am wondering if theres anything positive about using the Mackie to mixdown my tracks.

Basically utilizing certain plugins and such from the DAW and EQing/Panning/Setting Levels on the Mackie.

I am considering tracking on 1-16 and returning the audio to inputs 17-32 and then feeding my Main Outs into my TC Electronic Finalizer 96K to Master the final mix.

I have some Outboard gear I don't even use and could possibly start using them if I were to go this route.

I just want to know if theres any point or benefit go work outside the box again.

Part of me thinks that I might have easier control over what I am hearing with my hands on the mixer and possibly create some better mixes....

I often feel like all the computer knobs, and graphs are difficult to pin point naturally.

Any opinions?

It has pre-amps. Not sure what interface you have or if it has them.

I use a tascam tm d1000 digital mixer in front of an RME Hammerfall HDSP 9652 because it has lights and faders(and pre's!)

I have 2 Nuendo/RME 96K 8 I/O converters than run Optically into an Nuendo/RME 9652 card in my Mac G4.

So the Mackie does provide me with 32 Mic preamps.

I have only 1 outboard Mic Preamp, Grace Design Model 101.

Thats all great input wise.

I am still wondering mixing wise what peoples opinions are and if its worth setting up returns to give it a shot.

I guess I could also take advantage of the 8 bus's for extra control over leveling drums, guitars and other tracks as a group instead of changing individual levels on the Nuendo mixer?

Yes, set it up and give it a try. You may decide to do what I do, which is to mix both in the DAW and with outboard gear. There's no rule that says it has to be one or the other. You can use plugins where you want, and use your outboard where you think that sounds better. If you've already got the board, definitely set it up!

So do I. I have a 24.8 and a 24 expander Mackie and lots of preamps that are external which I go direct through a RME interface to the DAW. I also have effects in the rack that I use the Mackie sends for, including the 8 buss for 4 more stereo sends. I don't recommend sending the 8 buss to the DAW though as you are running a summing buss and that definitely will effect the clarity of your tracking. I have only found 1 plug in (I use Cubase 4) that I like for verb and thats the CSR IK Multimedia pkg. So I like to run my Lexicon units and Eventide through the board. I think the Mackie is neutral really. It isn't this warm monster machine, or a highly sterile think Behringer unit either.
Works for me.

Lou
