is a P.A. what I need??

We are pretty new to this music game and our problem is hearing the vocalist. Right now we don't have a P.A., he just sings into a a sony stereo on "monitor" and we can't hear him for s**t. The thing that confuses me is the stereo is 70 watts/channel and a cheap P.A system I found on music123.com is 80 watts/channel...is that what we need?? Oh another thing- we play in my garage so it's hard to hear in general. Any ideas???

Yeah, you need a PA. Even a good PA is hell to setup to get vocals sounding decent while jamming. Get lots of power, 800W per side, some good bins and your rockin. Or, don't play so loud.

I don't recommend the Fender Passport jobs, just in case you're looking at them. You won't get the vocals you need (assuming your not in a barbershop quartet). I’m in my basement for the winter, which is 4x the size of my garage where I normally am, and we can’t bring the vocals up enough without serious feedback. The garage is somewhat better relative to it’s size for some reason, -maybe the padded walls - but it still sucks.

I don’t know if this would work for you – hell, I don’t know if it’ll work at all – but I’ve been thinking about getting an amp for a normal set of good stereo speaker for monitoring use while playing. When I finally get around to getting recording monitors, I’ll already have the amp. But like I said, I’m not even sure that’s practical.
