My New Songs

I have a couple songs I've been working on, and I'm making good progress. I have just finished a course for audio engineering (home course from Audio Institute of America), so I've recorded some of my own songs for practice.

If you like System of a Down with a hint of Tool influence, then you'll like my songs.

"Not Your Enemy" is my newest creation. I'm very proud of this one. Plenty of style and song changes keeps it interesting all the way through.

"My Last Request" is my actually one I have posted on these forums before, but I have re-recorded it quite a bit and it sounds much better than it did. It still needs work cause there are some things that don't sound right. This is a pretty dark melodic kinda song.

These are still work in progress songs, so there will be plenty of changes and additions before they are completely finished. However, I think I've gotten a good start song and audio quality wise.....what do you think?

All comments and suggestions are highly welcome.

At 02:02 I started thinking that it's getting boring... luckily it had some variety right after.. But not for long..
Sorry to say, but the vocals are monotonic, nice at their own right, but should be interrupted at times by plain playing... minutes after minutes in the same half octave of singing gets a bit distressing.
the vocals are also a tad burying all the instruments...

Not bad, very horrormovie-monty python-metal kinda stuff, needs more melodies on the guitarists, perhaps tempo...

I agree that it was a little on the slow and boring side. the vocals really need work. I know you are going for that system of a down style, but they just dont really break out of that comfortable range at all. you have the sort of shakey vocal technique down, but just have to work on expanding the range of it. Also with such a unique vocal style it can be used VERY well for dynamic purposes. Thats why systems' songs work so well going from melodic to hardcore thrash and back again all in the same song. That also breaks up the monotony.

all just my humble opinion.

Well, I've taken some of what you both have said and attempted to spice it up a bit. So now I present to you Version 2 of "Not Your Enemy":

Download "Not Your Enemy - Version 2"

A big change is in the chorus....I have changed a lot of the melodic parts in the chorus and it sounds quite different now, better with more interesting element. I also harmonized with myself, and it sounds pretty good. I have pretty much re-recorded everything except the drums. The guitars have a bit of a different sound, which is better in my opinion.

Please give version 2 a listen, as it is quite different this time around, and let me know what you think.

does the second have a different vocal take? it seems pitch-ier than the first. which is ok at times. the soad singer is definitely not always on, but for the held out 5th's harmony..you can really tell if its on or not. a few punch ins would clean it up. i'm listening on a laptop...but i still thought the vocals were a little loud too.

i think the midi drums make it drag a bit, but with no drummer what can you do.

i think without a thrash part and drums not changing up from their basic pattern, it takes away from the energetic soad sound, but its your song...so deal with what you've got. i think some sort of part or layer that is pretty different from what's already there could help out. maybe a vocal harmony...maybe some higher clean guitar parts..i donno..whatever oyu want to do to make the rhythms not so repetitive.
